Charmaine Shamiso “Sha Sha” Mpambiro won Best New International Act at the 2020 BET Awards. She became the first Zimbabwean to win a BET award. Just the nomination was great news for her. But Charmaine emerged victorious in a battle against artists from France, UK, and Nigeria.

‪I’m out of words, did not see this coming at all 🙌🏽.Honestly I’m just grateful, thankful, excited , numb just a whole lot of emotions, the mere fact that I’m nominated man! This is amazing! ‬I need you all more than ever ❤️

Charmaine is one of the Zimbabwean Artists based in neighboring South Africa. DJ Maphorisa’s label Blaqboy Music signed Sha Sha in 2018.  Prior to that she had collaborated with some South African musicians. Amapiano, which Charmaine performs, is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012. A snap survey by ZBC News showed that some Zimbabweans actually thought Charmaine was South African. However, she was born in Mutare and moved around Zimbabwe where her career began.

The queen of amapiano, as fans call her, got into music at a young age. Her first air play caught the attention of singer-songwriter and record producer Audius Mtawarira, who then became her mentor. Grammy award winning Zimbabwean songwriter and record producer Brian Soko helped Charmaine in connecting with South African Musicians. But it was not all about award winners, Sha Sha’s cab driver was the link to DJ Mariphosa.
