I remember my father reading me this statement from a book; “A person’s toothache means more to that person than a famine in China which kills a million people. A boil on one’s neck interests one more than forty earthquakes in Africa.” Of course, this statement mostly applies if the man is not in China or has nothing in China. I later learned that, in journalism, proximity is one of the values of the news. Sharing is caring but how far can your care reach?

I have seen Tatenda Charles Munyuki’s name in the newspapers, on book covers, and credits of local film projects. Tatenda was an author first, then a publisher when necessity became the mother of adaptation. He was only passionate about filmmaking and writing books but when he could not gain sufficient resources or all the necessary support he began to establish support structures for himself. As an author who went through a lot of trouble getting his books out there, he set up TCM Publishing Zimbabwe. What’s fascinating about him is the main subject of his content. He is voicing concerns that appear to have no proximity to him.
If anything, the COVID 19 pandemic has shown that you are rarely too far from an issue. Beginning in Wuhan, Corona Virus Disease was far enough to ignore for even some provinces in China but now it has become too global to ignore. The virus is wreaking havoc. The wailing of vulnerable sections of society such as girls and women has now been amplified. In a crisis that prompts a survival of the fittest attitude, women and girls need more support than ever. The hand of Tatenda Charles Munyuki usually expresses the concerns of vulnerable girls and women. In sharing and caring about sisters, mothers, wives, female leaders and members of the community Munyuki paves way for solutions to imbalances and vulnerabilities.
Be there for someone. Reach out. Sharing is caring, even from afar you can make an impact. There are many areas where your help is needed. Be it advice, advocacy, funding, facilities or active involvement there is a place for you somewhere. Share the burden and the gain.
